Prenatal Fetal Diagnostics

Early diagnosis and planning of high-risk pregnancies provides the best possible outcome for mom and baby. Detection of these conditions typically requires expert training and skills in testing methods in addition to specialized knowledge about these conditions. To ensure you receive the most appropriate care and treatment, our experienced pediatric staff will conduct comprehensive prenatal diagnostic testing and evaluation of you and your fetus.

Our Radiology Department is staffed by a pediatric trained staff of radiologists and technicians who are skilled in performing and reading diagnostic testing specific to the needs of infants and children.

Our portable X-ray equipment and ultrasound allow us to perform important testing at the bedside eliminating the need to move your baby (after birth), which causes less stress and risk of infection during critical times.

Some of the more commonly used diagnostic tools that may be required before, during or after delivery include:

CT scans
A medical imaging tool that produces three-dimensional images to analyze the internal structures of the body including organs, the head, traumatic injuries, infections and spine. The technique is painless and can provide extremely accurate images of body structures in addition to guiding the radiologist while performing certain procedures and in some cases, eliminating the need for surgery.

Ultrasound uses sound waves to visualize structures beneath the skin and may help detect problems with your fetus during pregnancy. 

X-rays use electromagnetic radiation to make images to look for problems such as broken bones, or lung and abdominal issues.

MRI is a noninvasive test that uses radio waves and magnets to produce detailed three-dimensional pictures of your child’s heart, vessels, tumors and other body structures. MRI is superior to X-rays and other imaging modalities because it can create still and moving pictures in high resolution and is an extremely accurate method of disease detection.

Nuclear medicine studies
Nuclear medicine studies often complement information obtained from X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound and MRI. They are used to help doctors see structures within the body such as the bones, heart, brain, liver, bladder and kidneys and can help identify conditions such as infection, inflammation, birth defects, injury and tumors. Unlike many other imaging studies that only show a picture of the structure, nuclear medicine studies can also show how well these organs and structures are functioning.

Heart studies
If your child has been diagnosed with a cardiac defect or other condition, you will be referred to our Fetal Heart Clinic that specializes in cardiac diagnostic testing and advanced cardiac treatment in infants and children.
