Erin Loucks, MD, Earns Lactation Consultant Certification
Erin Loucks, MD, FAAP, IBCLC, RLC, has become an internationally board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and registered lactation consultant (RLC) through the International Lactation Consultant Association. To become certified, Erin had to complete 1,000 hours of teaching and working with mothers and their babies with breast-feeding. She also had to complete at least 45 hours of education through conferences and classes before sitting for the written exam.

“As a new physician following residency, I found there was a need in our community to help new mommies with breast-feeding issues,” says Erin on why she decided to become certified. “May mothers wanted to breast-feed, but often had difficulty in doing so. Lactation consultants are available, but there are methods that pediatricians in general could use to assist moms. As a pediatrician, I was interested in finding ways to help moms.”

Erin will work with residents and students, teaching them techniques to assist moms in the breast-feeding process. She will also see moms and babies on a referral basis in the Children’s Physicians Dundee office for breast-feeding issues on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information, call 955-7676.
